Outages and faults

Our top priority is making sure the community and our employees are safe while responding to faults and outages affecting our power, water and sewerage services.

In light of the current COVID-19 situation, to keep our customers, crews and contractors safe we’re following strict hygiene and physical distancing practices. When we’re working at your property or nearby you can help by:

  • following physical distancing guidelines if you need to interact with us.
  • contacting us before we enter your property to let us know if you or someone in your household is in quarantine or is self-isolating and not approaching us when we’re there.

Some work needs the power or water to be turned off to protect our crews.
We know there’s never a good time to be without power or water, so we’re doing all we can to keep any disruption to a minimum.

Current outages and interruptions

While we can’t prevent storms, animals or other factors affecting our systems and networks, our crews are prepared to respond and restore services as safely and quickly as possible.

Planned works interruptions

We undertake regular maintenance and upgrades to strengthen our networks and services, reducing the number of unplanned outages and issues in future.

Report a fault

Our crews can’t be in all places at all times, so we appreciate it when our customers take the time to report faults and outages. Please run through our quick fault checklist to see if you need to report a fault to us.

Reporting a fault or outage

Most power outages occur when something (for example, a tree or vehicle) connects with a powerline, triggering a protection system that disconnects the power. National standards require us to wait 15 minutes before attempting to re-energise the lines.

If you see a life-threatening or dangerous situation such as a powerline on the ground, call 000 or the Power and Water emergency line on 1800 245 090 immediately.

Before you report a fault or outage, follow our quick checklist:

Step 01

Does the problem appear to be limited to your property or one location, or is it more widespread?

If it's safe, check your street and your neighbours’ homes. If their electricity is out, we’re probably aware of the problem and on our way to fix it.

If it's at your place only, is there a chance you've missed a payment and been disconnected or limited? Find out more about your water bill, or see a list of electricity retailers to check this.

If it’s at your place only, and you’re sure you haven’t missed a payment, please contact Power and Water on 1800 245 090 and we will investigate the fault or outage.

If streetlights do not appear on the map, please contact your local council to report the fault.

Step 02

PowerWater
Are some of your electrical appliances working and others aren't?
This could indicate you have part power. This can occur when you have low power, fluctuating power or if you have three phase power, one of your three phases has stopped working.
If your water supply is interrupted or has problems, is it out, reduced or otherwise affected? Check  water problems here.
Step 03

Check our planned works page to see if the disruption relates to maintenance in your area.

Step 04

If a cyclone, storm or flood has caused the power outage, use our emergency checklist and learn how we respond in emergencies or major incidents.

Step 05

Most power outages occur when something (for example, a tree or vehicle) connects with a powerline, triggering a protection system that disconnects the power. National standards require us to wait 15 minutes before attempting to re-energise the lines.

Before reporting a power outage, please wait 15 minutes. Chances are we’re already on it.

Step 06

Been through this checklist and are sure you need to report this fault or outage to us?

You can report a fault online or over the phone during business hours from 8am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Report the fault online now

To report an urgent outage outside business hours, please call our 24-hour line on 1800 245 090.

If this could be a life-threatening or dangerous situation such as a powerline on the ground, call 000 or the Power and Water emergency line on 1800 245 090 immediately.
