Darwin River Dam is at full capacity

Darwin River Dam is full for the first time since 2018.

The dam is the main water source for the Greater Darwin region and has been slowly filling due to wet-season run-off within the catchment and localised rain over the dam itself.

It will now start to flow over the spillway.

“It’s exciting to see the dam at capacity,” Power and Water’s Senior Manger Service Delivery, Water Services Eric Boyle said.

“The dam is designed to flow over its spillway when it reaches capacity, guiding water flow downstream in a controlled way and preventing any structural damage.

“During spillway overflow, river levels downstream of the dam may rise quickly and cause sudden changes in levels at road crossings downstream from the dam.”

Litchfield Council and Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency services are monitoring the surrounding areas for any issues around flooding and safety.

Power and Water cannot provide information on downstream river levels or predictions about areas that may be inundated during normal spillway overflow.

”We advise that for your own safety, always stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways,” Mr Boyle said.
