Tree replacement for safe, reliable power and green streets in Alice Springs

Power and Water is continuing replacement works for some of Alice Springs’ street trees as part of its vegetation management program.

With a focus on balancing power supply reliability and public safety, we understand that trees are very important in the community.

Following a recent assessment of each and every tree close to the power network, a number of trees have been identified as posing a risk to the power network and need to be replaced.

Luke Stapleton, Vegetation Maintenance Coordinator, Power Services says that ensuring the power network is reliable and safe for the community and our workers is essential and one of Power and Water’s key priorities.

“We know that people care about trees and value their place in our neighbourhoods, however some trees and vegetation can present a significant risk to the power network.”

The current program is about replacing unsuitable trees with two new saplings that are better suited to grow near powerlines. Now the majority of saplings are established the unsuitable trees will be removed.

“Our replacement program started in spring last year with 100 saplings planted, and we are now ready to remove the first of the trees that are not suitable to grow around powerlines and electricity infrastructure,” Luke said.

“We chose shrubs that are more suited for verge planting with a maximum height of four metres. They are natives that we know grow in the region and include varieties of Callistemon and Eucalyptus (mallee).”

The shrubs were selected in consultation with the Alice Springs Town Council and expert advice was also sought from a local horticulturalist.

“Now, six months on, it’s time for the next stage, which is removing the trees the new saplings are replacing.

“Starting after Easter, 50 unsuitable trees areas will be removed between Tuesday 6 and Thursday 22 April.

“Our contractors, IVMS Australia will be working in the Braitling and Gillen areas.

“Trees that are due to be removed have been clearly signed and residents notified via a letterbox drop,” Luke said.

Power and Water is committed to the Alice Springs community and investing in better vegetation management around electricity infrastructure by planting appropriate trees.
