Saving water

Let's work together to secure the Territory's water future.

We all have a role to play in ensuring we have enough water for the Territory's future, and together we've made some important ground in cutting back on our water use over the past 10 years.

However, Territorians still use more than twice the amount of water as the rest of Australia. The Northern Territory isn’t immune to changing weather patterns and population growth is placing greater demand on our water resources. That’s why we need to keep living water smart.

Saving water in the Territory

Water is precious in the Northern Territory. Explore practical ways to save water at home or at work, check for leaks, and learn about the programs helping to secure our water future.

Check for leaks

Something as simple as a leaking toilet can waste more than 200,000 litres of water a year. A meter leak check is a fast and easy way to check for leaks at any time.

Programs helping Territorians save water

Power and Water also supports water conservation through community education and awareness programs across the Territory.

Living Water Smart

Living Water Smart is a Power and Water initiative helping communities across the Northern Territory reduce water use. Many people believe the Territory, particularly the Top End, has an endless supply of water, but this is not true.

In reality, we are using more water than can be sourced and supplied sustainably over the long term.

The program helps the Territory become smarter with water use while continuing to support investment, manage growth and protect our water supply for the future.

Educating the next generation is key to ensuring we have enough water for our future.

Since 2016, Power and Water has partnered with the Department of Education to deliver That’s My Water!, providing schools and students with water sustainability learning programs aligned to the Australian Curriculum.

Programs are available for different year levels and locations, helping schools engage students and support sustainability learning.
