Power will be restored to the majority of Alice Springs by about 9pm tonight as crews work to safely bring the network online after the severe weather overnight.

Power and Water crews from Darwin and Tennant Creek have travelled to Central Australia to support the response effort.

The storm pushed many trees and debris onto powerlines around Alice Springs, with almost 4,000 customers initially without power.

By 8am, power had been restored to about 2,500 customers after crews worked through the night.

Power supply to Amoonguna, about 15 kilometres southwest of Alice Springs, was restored about 11.30am. Supply had been affected by debris on the high voltage network.

Restoring power safely is the priority and Territorians should always assume powerlines are live.

If you see a powerline on the ground, stay away and call Power and Water on 1800 245 090.

If the service line from the overhead powerline to a property has been damaged or pulled away as a result of the storm, stay clear and call Power and Water to come and make it safe.

Customers will need to have a Northern Territory licenced electrician carry out repairs and issue a Certificate of Compliance before Power and Water can reconnect the power.
