Power and Water has welcomed 10 new apprentices from across the Northern Territory to embark on their new career journeys.

Arriving from Alice Springs, Katherine and Darwin, the group is participating in induction workshops this week, introducing them to the diversity of a multi-utility organisation.

This year’s successful applicants include a school leaver, mature-age students and some looking for a new trade career path.

Ashley Idsenga is an apprentice cable joiner based in Darwin.

‘I’m really looking forward to this opportunity, to learn new skills and have a career path,’ Ashley said.

‘I’m genuinely excited about the opportunities ahead.’

Huy Tran is an apprentice line worker based in Alice Springs.

‘I moved to Alice Springs from Vietnam in 2008 and am a qualified chef,’ Huy said.

‘My dream is to be qualified in the electrical field.

‘I have 2 children aged 5 and 2, and I want to be a qualified trade person by the time my youngest starts school.’

Employed by Group Training Northern Territory, the apprentices are hosted by Power and Water.

‘I’m really pleased to welcome this new group of apprentices,’ Power and Water CEO Djuna Pollard said.

‘I’m passionate about the work we do and the services we provide across the Territory and part of that passion includes growing and developing people, providing opportunities and helping them be the best they can be.

‘That’s why this program is so important - growing our own workforce and working together to make a difference to the lives of Territorians.’

The group will now start their four-year nationally accredited apprenticeship program, which provides the opportunity to learn specialised skills and training in electrical, mechanical and linework in our Power Services unit.

‘Participating in our apprenticeship program is a great experience,’ said General Manager People, Culture and Safety, Ian Jackson.

‘Our apprentices will have diverse opportunities that can provide great career options in the future.’
