Darwin River Dam has reached full capacity and is now spilling.

With the monsoonal weather conditions set to return in the Top End, the Darwin River Dam level will continue to rise and flow over the spillway in the coming days and weeks.

The Dam supplies about 85 per cent of the Darwin region’s water supply and is designed to flow over its spillway when it is at capacity, with the water flow guided downstream in a controlled way to prevent structural damage.

River levels downstream of the dam may rise quickly when the dam overflows, causing sudden changes in levels at road crossings downstream.

Always stay away from flooded rivers, drains and waterways for your own safety.

Litchfield Council, Northern Territory Police and Northern Territory Emergency Services will monitor the area for issues around flooding and safety.

Monitor SecureNT for information about preparing, responding and recovering from an emergency.

Ends.
