Long-serving Power and Water engineer Trevor Horman will be fondly remembered as a friend and mentor to many.

After a period of illness, Trevor passed away on the weekend.

Earlier this year, Trevor was honoured as being the first Power and Water employee to have a substation named in his honour in recognition of his years of service to the Corporation and the Territory.

The new substation, located next to the Berrimah Zone Substation which Trevor project managed post-Cyclone Tracy, was named the Trevor Horman Zone Substation.

In his most recent role with Power and Water, he was Manager Sustainable Energy with one of his career highlights being the installation of the 1MW Uterne solar PV tracking station outside Alice Springs, which at the time was Australia’s largest flat-plate solar installation.

He also project managed several major projects and served as Chief Engineer of the NT Electricity Commission, the predecessor of the Corporation’s power division.

Trevor was recognised at the 2018 Chief Minister’s Awards for Excellence in the Public Sector for his 50 years of service to the Northern Territory.

In 2013, he was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the Northern Territory, particularly through heritage preservation, the motor racing industry and the engineering profession.

Trevor moved to the Territory in 1971 with the Commonwealth Department of Works. One of his first jobs was to build Darwin’s new City Zone Substation in McMinn Street.

After the devastation of Cyclone Tracy, Trevor joined a team of 30 with the Electricity Supply Undertaking group - who were tasked with rebuilding and expanding the power network after the cyclone.

He was also president of the National Trust NT and a keen railway and motor sports enthusiast.

A celebration of his life for all those who knew him and whose lives he touched will be held at the Adelaide River Railway Heritage Precinct at 9am this Saturday, 23 November.
