Power and Water Corporation’s Solar Energy Transformation Program (SETuP) took out the Energy, Water and Resources category at the Northern Territory Engineering Excellence Awards held on Friday 17 August 2018.
The Solar Energy Transformation Program (SETuP) along with Power and Water Corporation’s Angurugu Sewerage Upgrade were both finalists at the event which celebrates outstanding engineering achievements.
SETuP Manager, Sam Latz is very proud to have the $59 million SETuP program recognised in this way.
"The potential savings in each community are at least 15 per cent reduction in diesel fuel use and there are also environmental and health benefits of the program," Mr Latz said.
"This work is changing the way Power and Water delivers power in remote communities – making solar energy an established part of future power station design."
The program has not only involved the installation of solar arrays in 25 communities, but has had a significant community engagement component that has seen Power and Water raise awareness in community of how ‘energy from country’ is being used to generate power. The program is co-funded through the Australian Government’s Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and the Northern Territory Government.
The Angurugu Sewerage Upgrade which involved replacement of an old asbestos cement common effluent drain (CED) system was also recognised at the awards as a finalist.
Senior Manager Water and Sewer Services, Nigel Deacon is proud the project achieved significant Aboriginal employment through a targeted procurement strategy.
"It was broken into packages of work, enabling more local contractors to be involved. At the end of the project, 50 percent of Aboriginal employees were able to secure long term work as a result of the training and experienced they’d gained working with us,” Mr Deacon said.
