Power and Water crews have attended recent power interruptions affecting parts of the Top End due to fruit bats caught in powerlines and high voltage power distribution equipment.
Fruit bats, also known as flying foxes, have caused disruptions in Dundee and Bynoe, while nesting in the area.
The main cause for the disruptions is bats breaking tree limbs that hit overhead powerlines. They can also hit the lines with their wings when perched.
Fruit bats are common visitors to these areas annually when native plants are in flower and then move on once their food source runs out.
Power and Water works to minimise power interruptions to customers and has upgraded insulators on overhead powerlines and replaced them with longer post-top insulators that provide greater clearance to birds and animals. In affected areas, specifically designed mesh mats have also been installed, which prove effective against smaller fruit bats.
The response times of fault crews to reinstate the power supply is always of high priority however with such large areas to cover, it can take some time to inspect and clear the lines.
