Power and Water will celebrate National Water Week from 15- 21 October by partnering with the Department of Education to launch of a new series of educational activities for schools across the Northern Territory.
A new e-storybook, called ‘The Great NT Water Story’ which aligns with National Water Week’s 2017 theme, ‘Water, the heart of our culture’ encompasses the unique culture, history and importance of water in each unique region of the Territory. Power and Water collaborated with the Department of Education to develop the educational resource as part of the Northern Territory school curriculum.
Power and Water’s Chief Executive Michael Thomson says the National Water Week activities are designed to instil genuine interest and awareness about water as a precious resource amongst Northern Territory students.
“Through story-telling, The Great NT Water Story aims to connect students across the Northern Territory through a conversation about our most vital natural resource. We have a range of schools on board already, including schools in remote communities, Central Australia and the Darwin region. Our grassroots approach will inspire school students to save water for future generations.”
Students from years three to six will have the opportunity to develop their own personal water storybook exploring how water shapes the lives of people in their own community past and present, before making a pledge to be water smart in the future.
The E-book and Teachers Guide is available to the public on the Power and Water website, for parents, carers and teachers who wish to share this fun activity with children at any time.
Also as a part of National Water Week, Power and Water is partnering with the Arid Lands Environment Centre (ALEC) to host tours of the Alice Springs Wastewater Treatment Plant on Saturday 21 October at 8am, 9am and 10am. Visitors will have the opportunity to see our treatment processes and learn about water recycling.
In Katherine, Power and Water’s Living Water Smart initiative will launch the Katherine Water Story in local schools to highlight and celebrate the role of water in ‘Big River Country’. The program’s Culminating Art Extravaganza will be an opportunity to allow students to showcase their commitment to being water smart.
