MEDIA STATEMENT
- At approximately 11 pm on Saturday, 20 September, a structural fire occurred at the Pirlangimpi power station on the Tiwi Islands.
- The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.
- Crew flew to Pirlangimpi on Sunday morning to assess the damage, which is extensive.
- At present we expect the community of around 370 people will be without power for at least 3 days while crews work to restore generation.
- This will involve temporary generators being transported to the community as soon as possible, with arrangements underway.
- The clinic and shop both have back-up generators, and we are working with Telstra to keep their network connected.
- No one was significantly injured because of the fire.
- We understand this incident is inconvenient for the community and thank them for their support and understanding while we work to restore power as quickly as possible.
