Eight new apprentices from across the Territory have kicked off their career with Power and Water this week with induction workshops in Darwin.

The group is a diverse mix of school leavers and mature-age students, with two based in Darwin, one in Katherine, three in Alice Springs and two in Tennant Creek.

Through the nationally accredited apprenticeship program, the apprentices will learn specialised skills and training across work streams of electrical, mechanical, linework, and water operations.

Georgena James is completing an electrical apprenticeship in Alice Springs.

“I have always had an interest in electrical work and can’t think of anything better than learning the trade with the Territory’s utility provider,” Georgena said.

“It means a lot to me that a large and important organisation like Power and Water is leading the way in gender equality by selecting a mature age female candidate for the Electrical Apprenticeship.”

The apprentices are employed by Group Training Northern Territory and will be hosted by Power and Water for the duration of their apprenticeship. The Power and Water apprenticeships have a nominal term of four years, expected to finish by 2026.

“It’s always exciting to welcome new apprentices to Power and Water and be part of growing and developing our capability and expertise for the future,” Power and Water CEO Djuna Pollard said.

"Our apprentices bring a fresh perspective to the way we operate and I look forward to being a part of their journey, working together to make a difference to the lives of Territorians.”
