Young Territorians showcased their creative ideas for protecting one of our most valuable resources at the That’s My Water! Expo.
As the program’s 10th year drew to a close, students from Years 3 to 8 from several Territory schools presented their innovative projects to Power and Water Corporation and a range of other interested stakeholders.
Expressed through songs, posters, artwork, story books, three-dimensional designs, poetry and media campaigns, initiatives ranged from re-designing Darwin River Dam and fixing leaking pipes to creating floating garden pontoons and novel rainwater tanks.
Their ideas highlighted the importance of recycling and saving water, and innovation in the Territory, especially as Darwin residents are the highest water users in the country.
Top End households use almost 400kL of water per annum, more than double the use in households in Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney, and significantly more than similar locations such as Townsville and Cairns.
At this year’s Expo, which celebrated 10 years of That’s My Water!, participants also shared a celebration cake and watched a video featuring present and past students who have been involved in the program.
More than 1,000 Territory students took part in That’s My Water! in 2025, the most in the program’s 10-year history, with more than 7,500 young Territorians taking part to date.
Manager Water Demand Joel Spry said the Expo was an inspiring end to a program that builds curiosity and awareness among Territory students about where our water comes from and how to protect this valuable resource.
‘This initiative is about more than education – it’s about helping young Territorians understand the importance of water in our unique environment and inspiring the next generation of STEM thinkers,’ he said.
Since 2016, Power and Water has partnered with the Department of Education to deliver the 10-week initiative – providing schools and students with water sustainability learning programs encouraging an interest in STEM careers and aligned to the Australian Curriculum.
