Power has now been restored to more than 8,000 properties in Alice Springs and surrounding communities following Monday’s severe weather event.

This is a reduction from around 9,000 properties without electricity on Monday afternoon to approximately 795 as at 5pm today.

Restoration yesterday and today

Significant high-voltage and low-voltage repairs were completed yesterday, including Ludgate Street, Braitling, Kennett Court, Ciccone,  Raganesi Road, Ross, Jay Creek, Jarvis Street and Hearne Place, Braitling and Simpson Street, in the town centre.

Today, crews focused on a major repair at South Terrace in The Gap and individual property service lines, prioritising customers who rely on electrically powered life-support equipment. All life-support customers have now had power restored.

Restoration focus tomorrow

Restoration of individual property service lines will continue, with the additional crews from Darwin, Katherine and Tennant Creek to remain in Alice Springs to assist with restoration efforts.

Given the extent of the damage, it will take some days to restore power to all customers.

We appreciate the impact of extended power outages on homes and businesses is frustrating and thank customers for their patience as our crews work to safely restore services.

Power outage payment

The Northern Territory Government is providing a one-off $250 power outage payment to eligible households in Alice Springs that have been without electricity for more than 72 consecutive hours due to the severe weather event.

The Department of Children and Families has established a Welfare Recovery Centre at 2 Railway Terrace, Alice Springs, to administer the payments, which can be made from 9am tomorrow, Friday, 16 October.

Power and Water and energy providers Jacana and Rimfire will provide a list of eligible property addresses to the Welfare Recovery Team to confirm which properties have been without power for 72 hours or more.

Our priority remains restoring power as safely and as quickly as possible.

We understand how frustrating and difficult it is to be without power for an extended period and thank customers for their patience as our crews work around the clock to restore services as safely and quickly as possible.

Important safety information for customers

  • Stay well clear of fallen power lines and damaged electrical infrastructure. Always assume power lines are live.
  • Do not attempt to remove fallen trees or branches from power lines.
  • Customers whose electrical service lines have been damaged or disconnected from their homes may need a registered electrician to inspect the damage and provide a Certificate of Compliance before power can be safely reconnected.

Our priority remains restoring power as safely and as quickly as possible.
