With irrigation one of the highest contributors to household water use, simple changes to watering habits, especially during the dry season can make a significant difference to your water bill without compromising healthy lawns and flourishing gardens.
Last year, we released The Ultimate Irrigation User Guide to support Top End locals, who want to keep the garden looking great and the water bills down. Available to download through our Living Water Smart website, the guide was created by nationally recognised horticultural, irrigation and agricultural experts and tailored specifically to the unique climate, soils and growing conditions of the Top End.
Power and Water Demand Manager Joel Spry said the guide was designed by locals, for locals.
"At this time of year, we know lots of people want to keep their gardens looking green and healthy, but it's just as important that we're not wasting water," Mr Spry said.
"Irrigation is one of the highest contributors to water waste, which is why we brought together local experts to create a practical guide that reflects the conditions we experience here in the Top End. During the dry season is also when you might notice that your irrigation is not working entirely as it should be. If you note a brown patch of grass, it’s a pretty good idea to check for leaks and breaks.”
The guide includes practical advice on improving irrigation efficiency, understanding seasonal watering requirements, selecting the right irrigation systems and maintaining healthy gardens while reducing unnecessary water use.
Local NT Agronomist Callum Hutcheson said, understanding the relationship between healthy soils and efficient irrigation was key to creating resilient gardens.
"Growing healthy gardens in the Top End comes with its own unique challenges, from our tropical climate and distinct wet and dry seasons to often challenging soil conditions," Mr Hutchinson said.
"Healthy soil and efficient irrigation go hand in hand. When your soil is in good condition, it holds moisture more effectively, meaning plants need less water and are better able to cope during the dry season.
"This guide brings together practical advice on improving soil health, understanding plant water needs and managing irrigation efficiently. It's a valuable resource for anyone wanting a healthier garden while making the most of every drop."
Our Water Efficiency experts will be heading along the Top End Native Eco Fair on 22 August, handing out copies of The Ultimate Irrigation Guide and providing top tips on your irrigation systems.
