Around 40 Katherine students stepped into the shoes of Power and Water essential workers recently, taking part in a simulated emergency response as part of the organisation's That’s My Career! program.
Following a successful launch in Darwin, the Katherine visit marked the first step in expanding That’s My Career! to regional areas. The initiative gives students an interactive introduction to the people and skills behind the Territory’s essential power, water and wastewater services, while helping them discover the range of career pathways available close to home.
Power and Water’s Early Careers Advisor Peter Morrison-Evans said bringing the program to Katherine was about giving regional students the opportunity to see first-hand where a STEM career could lead.
‘From line workers and electricians to water operations technicians and engineers, there are so many different careers that rely on STEM skills across Power and Water,' Mr Morrison-Evans said.
'That’s My Career! is about sparking that interest early and helping young Territorians understand the skills, qualifications and pathways that can turn that interest into a rewarding career. We want students across the Territory to see they can build a great career right here at home.’
Clontarf Foundation took part in the program. Liaison Officer Jake Greer said it was a great way for students to see the bigger picture.
‘A lot of students from small towns don’t really think beyond school,’ he said. ‘They’re thinking, “Let’s get through Year 12 and then we’ll figure out what’s next”. So getting them to think about their future in Years 10 and 11 opens their eyes to what’s out there.
‘Young people in regional and remote communities don’t always get the exposure to these kinds of interactive events either, so the program has been a great way to spark curiosity.’
While in Katherine, Power and Water also took part in the Big Rivers Careers Expo for the third consecutive year. Attendees had the opportunity to meet team members and learn more about careers with the organisation.
