Power and Water crews are continuing to restore power to customers across Central Australia following yesterday's severe storm.
The number of properties in Alice Springs without power has reduced from approximately 9,000 to approximately 3,500, with crews continuing to repair extensive damage to both the high-voltage and low-voltage electricity networks, including fallen power lines and damaged power poles.
We are aware that properties have been affected in several remote communities, including Hermannsburg and Wallace Rockhole.
Additional crews from Darwin, Tennant Creek and Katherine have been deployed to support the local Alice Springs team with the restoration effort.
Our priority remains restoring power as safely and as quickly as possible.
Power has been restored to critical infrastructure including Old Timers Aged Care, St Johns Ambulance Station, Fire Station, Roe Creek borefields (Alice Springs water source) and all Sewerage Pumping Stations except Amoonguna.
Given the extent of the damage, it may take some days to restore power to all customers.
The Bureau of Meteorology said that more storms are possible, and we are preparing for possible flash flooding, high winds and lightning this afternoon.
We understand the impact of extended power outages on homes and businesses and thank customers for their patience as our crews work to safely restore services.
Important safety information for customers:
- Stay well clear of fallen power lines and damaged electrical infrastructure. Always assume power lines are live.
- Do not attempt to remove fallen trees or branches from power lines.
- Customers who rely on electrically powered life support equipment should activate their emergency management plans. In a medical emergency, call 000.
- Customers whose electrical service lines have been damaged or disconnected from their homes may need a registered electrician to inspect the damage and provide a Certificate of Compliance before power can be safely reconnected.
We will continue to provide updates as restoration works progress.
