Territory comedian Amy Hetherington is challenging Territorians to think differently about how much water they use, and to turn off their taps for Water Night.

Water Night is encouraging Australians to think twice before using a tap between 5pm to 10pm on Thursday, 22 October, as part of a national water-saving challenge.

With the average Territory household using 1,000L of water each day at this time of year, even small changes to everyday habits can make a difference.

Power and Water’s Manager Water Demand, Joel Spry, said National Water Week was an important opportunity to remind Territorians that water is one of our most valuable resources.

‘Living in the Territory, we can all appreciate how quickly our seasons change, but what doesn't change, regardless of the time of year, is the importance of using our water wisely,’ he said.

Territorians can sign up to Water Night at https://waternight.com.au/ and show our interstate counterparts just how much water we can save in 5 hours when we band together.

‘We're not expecting everyone to stop using water, especially at this time of year when you’re sweating by the bucketful. We're asking Territorians to take 5 hours to think about how often they reach for the tap and whether they really need to… signing up also means you could win a fantastic prize,’ Mr Spry said.

The Water Night challenge forms part of Power and Water's annual support for National Water Week, alongside the organisation’s 11th That's My Water! Expo. For more than a decade, the That's My Water! education program has helped young Territorians understand the journey of water, from source to tap, and the important role they play in protecting our water resources for future generations.

The expo brings together students, educators and industry experts to explore where our water comes from, how it reaches our homes and creative ways we could all save water for the future.

‘Water education is about more than asking people to turn off a tap. It's about helping Territorians understand the value of water and how the choices we make today can help secure our water future,’ Mr Spry said.

‘Whether it's students learning about water at our That's My Water! Expo or families taking on the Water Night challenge at home, we want to make water conservation something everyone can be part of.’
