Power supply issues at Jabiru

MEDIA STATEMENT

  • Power and Water are the retail provider of power to the community of Jabiru. We source the power from EDL, who are the owner and operator of the power station.
  • At approximately 2 pm on Wednesday 31 December 2025, EDL advised Power and Water that due to issues with generators at the power station, they would be unable to provide enough power to meet the demand of the community overnight.
  • To keep as many homes and businesses connected to the power supply and to prevent further damage to the electricity network, Power and Water sent a crew to Jabiru to commence manual rolling load shedding.
  • Manual rolling load shedding is when the power is temporarily turned off in one area to keep another area with supply. The idea is to minimise disruption to customers while working with the amount of power available.
  • Power and Water commenced load shedding at 5pm on 31 December 2025, and maintained every effort to keep residents informed.
  • The load shedding continued through the night until there was enough solar energy available to restore power completely at approximately 7:30am on 1 January 2025.
  • We continued our efforts to keep the community and stakeholders informed through multiple channels.
  • At approximately 4pm on 1 January 2026, EDL advised Power and Water that they were unsuccessful with repairs and further rolling interruptions would be necessary.
  • The cause of the issue with generators is ongoing and EDL are continuing efforts to complete complex repairs.
  • At present we do not expect that EDL will be able to complete generator repairs until next week.
  • To support the community and minimise further disruption, Power and Water is sourcing and dispatching temporary generators to the community on Friday 2 January.
  • We acknowledge the impact of the power disruption has had on the community and are doing everything possible to support the restoration of a safe and reliable power supply to the area.
  • We will continue to provide updates as the situation unfolds.
