Basic connection
What you need to know about working with or connecting to our electricity infrastructure. Whether you're planning a new build or development, we can get you connect to our network.
When you need to apply
You will need to apply for a basic connection, if you
- need to connect a new residential or small business (including solar PV installations with an inverter capacity of less than 30kVA).
- modify residential or small business connections.
- request an unmetered connection (other than streetlights).
- need a temporary supply connection.
- require a removal of services and/or meters.
Connection process
- Complete the basic connection application. Prefer to download the applications? Download the basic application.
- We will make a technical assessment based on the information you have provided . We might contact you for further information or to request a property inspection.
- Depending on the connection location, pre-approval may be required. Required pre-approval locations.
By applying for a basic connection, we will assume that you want an expedited connection.

This process only applies to contestable areas.

Completing the basic connection application
Required information
- The full address of the property
- Your billing address
- Your contact details
- Site phones
- The electrician's details
- A list of fixed appliance, loads and generators (if any)
- Load information and AS-3000 maximum demand calculation) supporting documentation to be attached
- To finalise your connection, you must provide a Certificate of Compliance (CoC)
Processing the application
Once you receive approval, the property owner or customer will need to engage their retailer who will raise a request with us to have the meter installed.
Before the retailer can submit the request, the customer will need to provide them with the following information, which you will need to give them:
- property address
- average daily load
- registered electrical contractor details
- the installation type required
- supply phases
- to know if the registered electrician needs to be onsite when a Power and Water worker attends the location.
Response to applications could take up to 10 business days. Processing may be delayed if the retailer has outstanding actions to complete.

Connection service costs
As the network provider, we charge the costs for connecting the meter to the network to the retailer who raised the request. The retailer may pass these costs on to you as part of their fees.
Contact your retailer and ask if there are any additional charges for your connection request.
