CBD transmission water main - Snell Street to the Parap Water Tank
Power and Water Corporation is constructing a new transmission water main along Stuart Highway from Bagot Road to the Parap Water Tank.
Why is this project needed?
This $5 million project will improve the security of supply, increase flows, allow more efficient use of the Winnellie Water Tank and upgrade infrastructure elements that are nearing the end of their useful life.
Demand growth in the Parap, Woolner, Stuart Park and Darwin’s CBD areas has highlighted the need to upgrade the water infrastructure. Currently, the existing transmission main reduces in size causing a ‘choking’ effect on supply flows. By replacing the main with a larger one, this will be rectified. The proposed new transmission main will also provide an alternative method of supply to the Stuart Park Water Tank as well as delivering a gravity method of supply from Winnellie to the CBD and surrounding suburbs.
This project is Stage 1A of the Darwin - Berrimah/Northern Suburbs Water Strategy, which will provide water supply from Winnellie Water Tank to allow for future growth and development to the areas of Parap, Fannie Bay, Woolner and Bayview.
During stage two, the water main will be extended from Parap Tank to Armidale Street. Completion of second stage will allow for future growth and development in Stuart Park and the Darwin CBD including provision of emergency water supply.
Key project objectives
The project has some important objectives:
- provide capacity for future development
- provide redundant supply main to CBD
- improve zonal management - Darwin’s current zonal arrangement, consisting of three zones, is poorly configured to cope with current demands and does not allow for efficient management of infrastructure. This project, in conjunction with additional works (Darwin - Berrimah/Northern Suburbs Water Strategy) will allow for future division of zones to provide a better managed and more reliable network system.
- increase efficiency of distribution - The project will improve distribution efficiency such that these requirements can continue to be met.
What is the project’s timeline?
Water main works commenced May 2015 adjacent to the Stuart Highway from Parap Water Tank to Bagot Road. The project includes removal of trees in the road reserve and temporary realignment of the foot/bike path with some planned traffic interruptions. Heavy vehicles and machinery will operate in this area, excavating trenches and delivering steel pipe. To assist with public safety, the main work corridor has been fenced off. Project 1A has an estimated completion date of January 2016.
Detailed design for Stage 2 is underway and the project is expected to be completed during 2016-2017 financial year.
