Power and Water is replacing the Bittern Street (Wulagi) water main to improve the reliability of water supply to the area. The main has needed repairs to several breaks over recent months.
We have contracted local business, Quality Plumbing, to complete the works.
They will carry out works from Wednesday 4 March to Thursday 20 April 2020, between the following hours:
- 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday
- 7am to 1pm Saturday.
Quality Plumbing will construct the new water main along the odd numbered side of Bittern Street, within the road reserve and close to the kerb. This will allow the existing water main to remain undisturbed within the verge on the same side of the street until the new water main is ready for service. It will also minimise disruption to property water supply, the footpath, verges and driveways.
Quality Plumbing will start construction of the new water main at the Whimbrel Crescent main and progress the full length of Bittern Street, before crossing the road to connect to the Wulagi Crescent main. Please see the map below.
The crew will complete 30 to 40 meters of excavation and construction of the new water main at a time. They will then back-fill the trench and cover it with metal plates so it can stabilise overnight and be driven over. The following day, they will remove the plates and the surface will then be safe to drive on.
While works take place, access to driveways (odd numbers only) will be temporarily interrupted. Quality Plumbing will contact residents to advise when their driveway access will be affected. They may have to plate the driveway entrance, but it will not be blocked overnight.
The crew will also prepare property connections in readiness for the cut-over to the new main. They will dig a small trench and install pipes from the new water main across verges and the road (for properties on the opposite side to the main) to property connection points.
Once they have installed the connection pipe, they will backfill the verge trench and the road crossing and cover it with metal plates to stabilise overnight. The following day, they will remove the plates and the road surface will then be safe to drive on.
As construction moves along the street only materials to be used on any given day will be stored on site.
Safety directional signage and traffic management will be in place for public safety around the work site.
Completing the works
When the new water main is complete, water supply will need to be temporarily disconnected. This short supply interruption will let us connect the new main to existing mains in Wulagi Crescent and Whimbrel Crescent, and to disconnect properties from the existing main supply and connect to the new main.
Quality Plumbing will contact residents to advise when this will take place.
The old main will be capped and sealed and remain in place within the verge when all connections are switched over to the new main.
To complete the works, contractors will hotmix the new water main road excavation route and road crossings and reinstate the footpath and verge crossings.
Power and Water will repair any damage caused to the footpath, verges and driveways.
If you have any queries about the works please contact us.
