Affected residents will be advised shortly.
Undergrounding works have now commenced in Rapid Creek in SP4 (Areas A15-A19). This area is bordered by Fox Crescent/Rossiter Street/Rapid Creek Road/Casuarina Drive/Ternau Street. Affected residents will be notified accordingly prior to the commencement of works.
Undergrounding the House Service
A new underground service will be installed into each property (if not already underground) by boring two conduits to the existing supply point (this is the meterbox in most cases). Cables are then installed into the conduits until they are terminated in readiness for the final changeover to underground supply.
Electrical Works
This involves installing high and low voltage and streetlighting cables under the footpath and house services into properties together with substations/ring main units and distribution pillars.
Ground Penetrating Radar
A ground penetrating radar is being used to locate existing services in the road corridor, such as water pipes, telecommunications and power cables. Radio frequency signals are sent from the radar and bounced off pipes and cables to locate their size, depth and position. This will allow us to select the best route for the trench and speed up the civil works.
What about streetlights?
During the design stage of the project, the streetlighting levels were reviewed.
As most of the streetlights are on the power poles that will be removed, new streetlighting will be installed to meet the Australian Standard.
Where possible, it is planned to place the new streetlight columns at the common boundary of properties.
Who pays for underground power?
Undergrounding the power supply is a Northern Territory Government initiative and the government is directly funding the majority of the works. Power and Water is funding the remainder on a commercial basis.
Improving Reliability
On average, areas of Darwin already supplied by underground power have less than one quarter of the power interruptions than the areas supplied by overhead powerlines. Undergrounding the power will greatly reduce the risk of another cyclone devastating Darwin’s electricity distribution network.
