Saving Water in the Home

By making a few small changes you will reduce your water use without impacting on your lifestyle.

Here are some simple things you can do to use water wisely in your home:

In the Kitchen

  • Choose water efficient cycles when you use the dishwasher
  • Wait for a full load before running the dishwasher or doing the dishes.
  • Don’t leave the kitchen sink tap running – a normal tap will use 15 – 18 litres each minute.
  • Install an aerator or flow controller on your kitchen sink tap.
  • When next buying a dishwasher or tap aerator, look for a WELS rating so you can check how water efficient it is.

Bathroom

  • Install a water efficient showerhead. Today’s efficient showerheads feel no different to a normal showerhead that can use up to 19 litre more water each minute.
  • Turn the tap off while you brush teeth or shave – don’t leave the water running.
  • If you feel like a long shower, consider having a bath.

Toilet

  • Use the half flush where appropriate.
  • Check that your toilet isn’t leaking – a leaking toilet can waste a litre of water in an hour, and left for a year will waste 60,000 litres of water. An easy way to check for a leak in your toilet is to add a few drops of food colouring into your cistern, and without flushing, check the colour of the water in the toilet bowl. If the coloured water is getting through, call a plumber to fix the leak.
  • If you have an old single flush toilet, think about replacing it with a dual flush water efficient system. This could save around 51 litres of water for each person in your home each day.

Laundry

  • Use a water saving cycle when you do a load.
  • When next buying a washing machine, check the water efficiency label to make sure you are buying a water wise machine. It may cost more initially, but over the long term you will save money.
