Celebrity Lighten Up Winners 2008
Power and Water’s Celebrity Lighten Up challenges celebrities and local identities to reduce their energy and water consumption and encourage the rest of the community to do so too.
Run in the lead up to the Melaleuca Awards for Environmental Excellence, the winners of Celebrity Lighten Up were also announced this afternoon at the Melaleuca Awards ceremony.
Celebrities with large houses and pools and gardens to small townhouses and apartments took up the challenge and had their water and electricity consumption monitored over the past three months.
This year’s winners are:
Darwin
Daniel Bourchier, Journalist, NT News
“I had to be tough on power usage and my flatmates. We all live busy lives but when my flatmates realised how easy it was they both got involved. They stopped using the aircon, which meant we opened up the house more, partly because they couldn't find the batteries for the remote - I'd taken them out and hidden them. We switched off appliances that were on standby and lights that were not needed and set power saving timers on computers. We also saved water by washing more efficiently and doing less loads.”
Katherine
Joyce Adams, Terrace Emporium
“It's really made us aware of how much we're using and what's on. You know we're still going around the house turning lights off and thinking about which plant we can put our water on this time instead of letting it go down the drain.“
Tennant Creek
Alicia Scobie and Tim West, Celebrity Teachers
“We turned the lawn reticulation off and watered later in the afternoon/evening. We had shorter showers and made sure we only used the half flush on the loo too.”
Alice Springs
Tony Mayell, Chief Minister's Department
“It was an enjoyable challenge. Even the kids were having fun with it. We were all pretty chuffed when the results came in and we could see that our efforts had made a difference.”
A ‘consumption graph’ has been kept on the Power and Water website tracking all the celebrities’ progress and Power and Water thanks and congratulates all celebrities who took part in the challenge this year:
