Water Wise Garden in Alice Springs

How to Create a Water Wise GardenAlice Springs residents are estimated to be among the biggest water users in Australia.

“People in the Centre use up to three times the water as people living in most Australian cities,” Power and Water’s Area Manager South Alan Whyte said.

“Many people in the Centre mistakenly believe that we have a guaranteed ongoing water supply because our water is sourced from underground. But the supply is finite and, with climate change likely to impact on rainfall patterns, we need to develop new water habits.”

Power and Water, alongside the Nursery and Gardening Industry of Australia, has developed a publication to help Central Australian residents develop ways to best use their water.

Up to 70 per cent of household water use is in the garden, but Mr Whyte said being water wise did not have to compromise on having a beautiful garden.

NGINT’s Jane Dellow agreed: "Water conservation and preservation for our future is a national responsibility and it starts in all of our back yards.

“Everyone can have a great garden and be water wise at the same time, it's just a matter of how. Education is the key and we hope that this booklet will help gardeners understand how they can achieve gardening success using less water.”

How to create a water wise garden in Central Australia was launched at an industry function in Alice Springs last night.

“The Northern Territory is the only mainland state without water restrictions, but this does not mean that people should take this finite resource for granted,” Mr Whyte said.

“The responsibility of ensuring we have enough water for the future is in the hands of all Territorians.”

“The combination of changing weather patterns and growing population means the community will either have to reduce water consumption or invest in new infrastructure such as water storage tanks.”

The booklet will be available from NGINT nurseries, Power and Water front counters, and copies will also be available online at www.powerwater.com.au
