Ron Goodin Power Station relocation of two gas-turbined generatorsRelocation of two gas-turbined generators at Alice Springs’ Ron Goodin Power station will form a major component of a $20 million investment in the future power needs of the city. The Titan and Taurus generators will be moved to Brewer Estate, an area zoned industrial, 25kms from Alice Springs. At its 7 February 2007 meeting the Power and Water Board agreed to develop a new power station site for Alice Springs. The Board also agreed that no new generators would be installed at the Ron Goodin Power Station. Brewer Estate was among three sites under consideration by the Power and Water Board and was chosen because it minimised the impact on customers and the general public both environmentally and economically. The two other sites under consideration included Ilparpa and Norris Bell Avenue. Critical issues to be addressed with the relocation to Brewer Estate include the order and delivery of 66kV transformers and native title issues with the transmission route. The current Alice Springs Land Use Structure Plan and Land Use Objectives have identified the Brewer Estate as the next site for the Alice Springs Power Station. As part of the relocation a new gas pipeline will need to be built, at an estimated cost of $3 million. An additional new generator will be installed at the Brewer Estate site subsequent to the relocation of the Titan and Taurus generators. “The process is a long and complex one, but wherever possible the Power and Water Corporation will work to compact the time frame,’’ Power and Water General Manager Generation John Linton said. “We have to acquire the land, follow a number of tender processes, plan for upgrades, negotiate indigenous interests over the land and secure the appropriate materials and equipment required to enable the relocation. “The organisation needs to ensure due process is followed, and it should also be taken into account that external factors, including seasonal influences, may impact on the time frame of the relocation.’’ Contact: |
