Melaleuca Environment Award Winners Announced

Winners of the 2007 Power and Water Melaleuca Awards have been announced at a function at Parliament House.

Power and Water Corporation Managing Director Andrew Macrides said winners were named in the categories of Commercial/Industry, Community, Schools, Small Business and Environment Grants.

The winners were:

  • Casuarina Square – reducing cardboard waste (Commercial/Industry)

  • Katherine Town Council – Water saving devices at Katherine Sportsground and Aquatic Centre (Community)

  • Pularumpi School – saving water through a new irrigation system (Schools)

  • Eco Options – providing environmentally friendly household and building products (Small Business).

Imparja TV children’s program Yamba’s Playtime and Millner Primary School’s efforts to reduce power usage were highly commended.

The inaugural Chairman’s Award was presented to Katherine High School Intensive Learning Unit, whose students with special needs have created a garden to showcase their abilities.

Also announced were the recipients of Power and Water’s Environmental Grants:

  • Desert Knowledge Australia COOLmob – for developing an eco-footprint calculator suitable for Alice Springs

  • COOLmob – for conducting home sustainability audits

  • Millner Primary School – for installing a water conservation system for the school

  • Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College – for planting trees at Hamilton Downs Station on the Year 7 school camp.
