Update to local residents in the Ron Goodin Power Station area - Tenders to construct the new $57 million Owen Springs Power Station advertised

A request for tenders to construct the new Owen Springs Power Station, to be located at the Brewer Estate, was advertised at the end of November, marking an important milestone in the project.

Tenders will close in January with the successful tender being recommended to Power and Water’s Board in February and construction expected to start within weeks of the contract being awarded.
The tender has two components:

    • Building of infrastructure and ancillary works
    • Installation of three, 8MW generating units (reciprocating piston engines). The first  is scheduled to be installed by the end of 2008, the second by the end of 2009 and the third by the end of 2011.

The scope of the tender also includes all the preparation, connection points and switch gear for the Taurus and Titan gas turbines currently at Ron Goodin Power Station, but not their relocation – this will form part of a separate tender process in the early part of 2008.

The first gas turbine to be relocated will be the smaller Taurus unit, scheduled to be moved before October 2008 and allow the new power station systems to be commissioned. The second move will be timed to fit in with power demands at the time in Alice Springs, but is planned to directly follow the move and re-commissioning of the first unit.

For supply security reasons, the larger Titan unit cannot be removed from Ron Goodin until all the systems at Owen Springs have been tested, including the new transmission links into Alice Springs.
