Noise Report Ron Goodin Power Station

The report into the effectiveness of noise abatement measures taken at Ron Goodin Power Station was released today to the public.

Undertaken by sound specialists Hayes McKenzie APW, the detailed 137-page report assessed noise levels at several locations around the Ron Goodin Power Station.

Responding to residents’ concerns, $800,000 in works aimed at reducing noise emissions from the Titan gas turbine were undertaken by the Power and Water Corporation, including building a new exhaust stack with extended baffles.

In its report Hayes McKenzie concluded "there has been a clear reduction in the noise emitted by the Titan as a result of the fitting of the new exhaust stack’’.

"It appears clear that since the fitting of the new exhaust stack, noise from the operation of the Titan is not significantly increasing the noise from the Ron Goodin Power Station," the report noted.

However, it is also evident from the report that issues with noise still remain.

Power and Water will send the full report to affected residents and will hold a public meeting in Alice Springs on January 29 to listen to their views. Details about the meeting will be forthcoming shortly.

Both the report and residents’ concerns will be considered at the next Power and Water Board meeting on February 7.

"The report is detailed and complex and we want to give residents time to consider and digest it," Power and Water General Manager Generation John Linton said.

"We want to ensure that the views of affected residents are heard at our next board meeting."
