9 November 2007 Going for green – Power and Water Awards Contract to Build Territory’s First Green Star Rated Building.Power and Water Corporation has awarded a $10.6 million contract to Laing O’Rourke Australia Construction Pty. Ltd., to construct new office and workshop buildings at the Ben Hammond Complex in Stuart Park as part of Stage 2 of the Ben Hammond Complex Redevelopment. Laing O'Rourke began operations in Australia in 2004 acquiring Barclay Mowlem in 2006, one of Australia's leading multi-disciplined construction and services companies. The new office building has been designed to achieve a 4 Star Green Building rating as certified by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA). This certification signifies ‘Australian Best Practice' in Environmental Sustainable Design. The design of the new office and workshop buildings was undertaken by GHD, (one of Australia’s leading engineering consultancies) which in turn engaged the services of Darwin based MKEA Architects for the architectural design of the buildings. The combined expertise and commitment of GHD, MKEA, Laing O’Rourke and Power and Water, will, if successful, be instrumental in achieving the first Green Star accredited building in the Northern Territory and only the second such building to be constructed north of the Tropic of Capricorn. The redevelopment of the Ben Hammond Complex is the largest commercial project to date in the Northern Territory to incorporate a comprehensive ESD strategy, and when complete it is estimated that there will be a reduction in energy and water usage for the site of around 20%. Power and Water will apply to the GBCA for accreditation before construction starts. The design emphasises increased energy efficiency and reduced emissions, which are the two most significant factors in minimising a building’s environmental impact. Before a Green Star rating can be awarded, all design submissions must be assessed by an independent panel of professionals from a diverse range of industry backgrounds including, property development, construction, engineering and architectural design, and environment. Stage 1 of the BHC redevelopment was completed in 2005 and Stage 2 construction works that were started in 2006 are expected to be complete by early 2009.Contact: |
