National meeting to discuss sustainable water supplies

This year Power and Water Corporation will host the 2007 Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA), Environment and Energy Network Workshop meeting, ‘Sustainable Water Supplies’, in Alice Springs from 15 – 17 October.

Randall Scott, Power and Water’s Environment Manager said, “The workshop aims to explore the sustainability and environmental challenges of water supplies in arid landscapes, including some of the difficulties faced by remote communities such as distance, costs and maintenance of the systems.

The meeting provides a good opportunity to showcase some of the great environmental projects happening in Alice Springs including the water reuse project and the solar power installation at the community of Hermannsburg.”

Attendees for the workshop will travel from across Australia, and include WSAA members and Environment Managers from state water utilities such as WA Water Corporation, SA Water, Melbourne Water, Gold Coast Water and the Sydney Catchment Authority.

Waste Stabilisation Ponds - Alice SpringsA site visit to the Hermannsburg wastewater treatment system, the Alice Springs sewage ponds to inspect the Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) plant as part of the water reuse project, and the Arid Zone Research Institute (AZRI) to view the Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) System are included as part of the workshop program.

Workshop themes also cover; sustainability assessment approaches, regulatory and management aspects, environmental and bio-diversity issues in Arid Zones, and energy optimisation and wastewater treatment.
