Thursday 21 September 2006 Darwin school students paint water pipesMarrara Christian School students are taking a break from their classrooms and have headed outside to paint a section of the water pipe in Parap. Local artist Janie Andrews has been working with students from Marrara Christian School to design and paint new images onto the water pipe. “The students are really enthusiastic about this project,” said Ms Andrews. “They have spent time in the classrooms designing the artwork, which will then be transferred onto the water pipe. “The students are a combination of Year eight, nine and ten art students, and a Year 12 class are also using it as a special Community Studies project. “The students have used a combination of traditional, environmental and water saving ideas to create these unique designs, with a particular focus on Top End native plants.
The water pipe transports water that has been pumped from Darwin River Dam, and delivers it to water storage tanks in the Darwin CBD and northern suburbs. Power and Water’s Paul Heaton, General Manager Water Services, said the involvement of the school students encourages community ownership of this asset. “We prepared the pipe for painting, by sandblasting grime and old paint, and removing nearby trees and bushes,” said Mr Heaton. “Weatherproof paint will be used to ensure the painting lasts, and will also protect it from graffiti.” The section of pipe the students are painting extends for around 100 metres, and runs parallel to the Stuart Highway between Parap and Stuart Park. The Power and Water Corporation has sponsored the painting of the water pipe. St John's College Pipe Painting Keep Australia Beautiful Council NT Photo opportunity: Marrara Christian School students will be painting the pipeline today, Thursday 21 September between 9am and 11am in Parap.
