Major Milestone Reached to Secure Gas to Power the NT

The Power and Water Corporation has today signed a Heads of Agreement with Australian Pipeline Trust, the company that will transport gas from the Blacktip Field in the Bonaparte Gulf.

Power and Water’s Managing Director, Kim Wood said signing this agreement was an important milestone in securing gas that will be used to power the Northern Territory.

“This is a further development to the Heads of Agreement entered into with ENI last year, where the Power and Water Corporation will purchase around 850 petajoules of gas over the next 25 years, from the Blacktip Field in the Bonaparte Gulf,” said Mr Wood.

“Australian Pipeline Trust will construct the pipeline that will transport the gas from an onshore plant near Wadeye (Port Keats) to near Adelaide River, to join the existing gas pipeline that carries gas from the gas fields in Central Australia to Darwin.

“The new pipeline will be around 275km in length, and it is anticipated construction work will take around three months to complete, with works to begin in the Dry Season of 2008.”

The construction of the pipeline is a $130 million project, which will include employment and training opportunities for locals.

“The next stage in this project is for Australian Pipeline Trust to precisely define the pipeline route, which will involve consultation with Traditional Owners, and will take into account cultural, environmental and heritage issues,” said Mr Wood.

“These consultations and surveying will begin in the 2006 Dry Season.”
