Aspiring Tennis Greats Set Their Sights on Alice Springs Tournament

Around 200 Alice Springs primary school students will have an opportunity tomorrow to convince Tennis Australia representatives that they could be the next Australian tennis superstar.

The seventh annual Junior Gala Tennis Open Day gets underway tomorrow, Wednesday 13 September, at the Red Centre Tennis Academy, and will run from 8.30am to 2.30pm.Alice Springs Tennis Centre

Alice Springs Tennis Club Academy Director, Matt Roberts said the tournament provides an opportunity for students who have never played competitive tennis before to participate in a competitive atmosphere.

“For the first time, Tennis Australia representatives will attend the tournament, in their search to identify the next Lleyton Hewitt or Alicia Molik,” said Matt.

“Twelve of the students will receive a Power and Water tennis scholarship, which will provide them with a free coaching program for the rest of the year.”

The Power and Water Corporation sponsors the Alice Springs Tennis Club’s Junior Gala Tennis Open Day.

Power and Water’s Area Manager Alan Whyte said the Corporation was proud to support this tournament.

“Junior development is essential for the future of tennis in the Territory, and Power and Water’s sponsorship of the squad provides an opportunity to improve their skills with quality coaching,” said Alan.
