Tuesday 2 May, 2006 Young Country Footy Players Play Hard in Katherine
Power and Water sponsored the AFL Kickstart Power and Water U/17 Country Championships, held in Katherine on the May Day long weekend (30 April). Players aged 14 to 17 from Tennant Creek, Borroloola and Katherine played in the championships, and a representative side will be chosen from the championships to play against Darwin on May 27. The championships were an opportunity for the boys to learn about lifestyle messages and leadership qualities, as they move from adolescence to manhood. Over the weekend the players will have the chance to visit education displays including stands giving information on police and health. A Power and Water stand will provide information on the value of water saving initiatives. Power and Water sponsorship manager Donna Boyce said the Corporation was delighted to help provide a pathway for young Territorians from across the regions to play AFL at a higher level. “These championships will help to find the best footy talent in the Territory – and who knows, we just might discover the next Michael Long or Maurice Rioli,” said Ms Boyce. Fred Murphy the AFLNT Regional Development Manager for the Katherine Region believes that the “championships will give all boys a great opportunity to follow their dreams and provide an identified pathway to the Territory Thunder AFL Program”. “A special thank you also to Power and Water for sponsoring the first ever AFL Kickstart U/17 Country Championships,” said Mr Murphy.
