Aiming for Excellence in Engineering

Engineers throughout the Northern Territory, Indonesia and East Timor are being encouraged to innovate and excel, with a little help from the Power and Water Corporation.

Power and Water is a major sponsor of the 2005 Northern Division Engineering Excellence Awards, and winners will be announced at a ceremony this Friday 12 August at Liberty Square between Parliament House and the Supreme Court.

The awards are open to projects anywhere in the world, provided that a significant part of the engineering component was completed in the Northern Territory, Indonesia or East Timor, which comprise the Engineers Australia Northern Division.

There are two main categories, an overall award for a project and the People in Engineering Awards: Professional Engineer of the Year, Young Professional Engineer of the Year, Engineering Associate of the Year and Young Engineering Associate of the Year. The winners will be eligible for entry to the national awards.

Power and Water’s General Manager Technology Services, Rebecca Kardos said the corporation was pleased to help promote excellence and innovation in engineering.

“Engineers make an enormous direct and indirect contribution to our community, our economy and the way we live our lives,” said Rebecca.

“The Power and Water Corporation is delighted to support engineers in our region as they pursue the highest possible standards in engineering.”

Power and Water Corporation’s operational headquarters in Darwin – the Ben Hammond Complex – is entered in these Awards. Recently refurbished, the new offices and facilities are a vast improvement on the original structure, which was built in the late 1960s as part of the Railway North Australia project.

Engineering consultancy, Kellogg, Brown and Root, provided the structural design and project management. Irwinconsult provided the mechanical and electrical design.

The redevelopment consisted of four separate, but linked projects, including removing asbestos, structural upgrade, refurbishing the main workshop offices, transforming the old canteen building into new offices and a training centre, and upgrading the stormwater drainage system. Internal refurbishment of the main workshop included removing and replacing internal walls, floors and ceilings, and installing structural supports, a lift and stairs.
