Split System Airconditioners

There has been some recent increase in the incidence of split system air conditioners being installed by persons who are not qualified or licensed to carry out the work.

Drawing of penguins in the snow. This has led to circumstances where wiring has been installed incorrectly or unsafely. This has lead to circuits and mains cables being overloaded and “flicker” interference to lights and other appliances when the air conditioner starts up.

This information sheet is to advise the correct method of having a new split system air conditioner installed and connected to power supply.

The air conditioner’s inside fan unit and outside compressor unit should be installed by a trained and competent person.

The electrical wiring to the air conditioner and the electrical wiring between its two components must be installed by a qualified and licensed Electrical Mechanic who is, or is employed by, a licensed Electrical Contractor.

DOs and DON’Ts

DO NOT take for granted that any firm or trades person is suitably licensed.

DO NOT engage a firm or trades person who is not willing to freely show their licence or has some excuse for not doing so.

It is quite appropriate for you to ask to see licences and it is in your own interest to do so. Make sure the licence is current and issued in the Northern Territory. You may confirm this licence by phoning the Electrical Workers and Contractors Licensing Board on 8981 5435.

DO ask for, and insist on receiving, an “INSTALLATION TEST CERTIFICATE” at the
completion of the electrical work. This is your assurance that the work has been carried out, inspected and tested to comply with electrical safety standards.

It should be noted that generally it IS NOT appropriate to plug a split system air conditioner over 2hp into an existing 10amp power point. It will require a separate circuit to be installed from the
switchboard.

Additionally, for air conditioners over 2hp, some form of assisted starting is generally required to prevent “flicker” on start up.
