Our Melaleuca Awards recognise outstanding achievement in environmental excellence. There are five categories: Community, Commercial/Industry, Small Business, Schools and Environment Grants.

The 2008 Melaleuca Awards winners were announced at Parliament House on 18 June. There were four category winners, one recipient of an environment grant and the Chairman’s Award.
The category winners each received a Melaleuca Award, designed and produced by local artist Jon Firth, a certificate of Environmental Excellence and a Level One Water Audit from Power and Water. The Chairman’s Award winner has been granted $1,000 to donate to the environmental organisation of their choice.
Congratulations to all our winners and to everyone who entered – it’s great to see there are people out there trying to reduce their impact on the environment.


This category recognises outstanding achievements within the community and includes local government, urban and suburban households, and rural or remote property owners.

This category recognises outstanding performance in commercial and industrial sectors.

This category is designed to encourage and reward small businesses that factor environmental considerations into their business operations.

This category recognises outstanding achievements in Territory schools.

The Chairman’s Prize of $1,000 was awarded to one entrant for donation to an environmental organisation of the winner’s choice.

The recipient of Power and Water's Environment Grant is:
- Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA)
This year, a grant of $4,000 has been made to (CVA) to further their work on invasive ant surveys at locations around Nhulunbuy. In partnership with CSIRO, CVA teams will locate nesting colonies of Yellow Crazy Ants and African big-headed Ants for future eradication. Both species are highly invasive and have a significant impact on biodiversity.
