Melaleuca Awards 2006

2006 category winners attended the Power and Water Melaleuca Awards ceremony on 22 June at Parliament House. Winners were presented with a Melaleuca Award, designed and produced by local glass artist Christine Isaacs using recycled glass and timber provided by local woodworker John Dimos. Winners also received a Certificate of Environmental Excellence and a free
Level One Energy Audit from Power and Water (excluding the
Environment Grants Category).

The recipients of Power and Water’s Environment Grants were:

• COOLmob – Software to Facilitate Home Sustainability Audits 348kb PDF

• Darwin High School 399kb PDF
• Charles Darwin University – this grant will fund an honours research project to analyse the regulation of rivers in the tropics, specifically the Darwin and Blackmore rivers. Ultimately this project could provide information that would help us to better manage the Darwin River catchment.

2006 Melaleuca Award Celebrity Lighten-Up Challenge:

• Our Celebrity Lighten Up Challenge involves some of the Territory’s well-known names and faces agreeing to let us see just how green they really are. Although the Challenge is light-hearted, it has a serious message about lightening our impact on the planet. Over three months, we take a close look at our celebrities’ day-to-day power and water use to discover which celebrities are misers, and which are big users!

Show Us How You Save Buckets - Poster Competition:

• As part of the 2006 Melaleuca Awards, Power and Water held a poster competition for schools.

The 2006 Melaleuca Awards were launched using our Environment Bus which may be seen on Darwin bus routes. The Bus was designed to raise awareness about the environment and encourage entries into the Melaleuca Awards.
