Avoid the Power Peak and Save Money

Some commercial and government customers use most of their power outside the high demand period of 6am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. The Time-of-Use Tariff rewards customers who are able to shift their power usage to the non-peak period.

This distributes the timing of demand on Power and Water's generating and transmission equipment, saving Power and Water and its customers millions of dollars in future investment. It also reduces greenhouse gas emissions as it allows Power and Water to operate a highly efficient plant, 24 hours a day, rather than having many plants which only operate during peak hours.

You will save on your electricity bill where more than 50% of your total power consumption is used during the off-peak period.

Power Service Charges
Some electricity services attract extra charges. These include:
Charges
Connection $56
Reconnection after non-payment $61
Reconnection after non-payment after hours $78
Special meter reading fees (at the customers request) $45

Calculate your total business power consumption

The Time of Use (TOU) tariff is designed to encourage large consumers of electricity to use more during the off-peak period than the peak period. The off-peak period is during the night, when our generating system has capacity that is not being used. Therefore, the unit cost of electricity during this period is cheaper.

The TOU charge consists of two time periods, peak and off-peak. The peak period is between 0600 hours and 1800 hours, and the off-peak period is between 1800 hours and 0600 hours.

Refer to the figure below.

Off-Peak 13.01 per kWh 1800 hours to 0600 hours, 7 days a week
Peak 23.11 per kWh 0600 hours to 1800 hours

Once electing to be charged at a General Purpose Time of Use Tariff, the applicant shall be charged for a period of not less than 12 months.

A customer will save on their electricity bill where more than 50% of the total consumption is used during the off-peak period.

Commercial Time Of Use Tariff

The following is a guide to enable a consumer to determine if they use more than 50% of their total daily consumption during the off-peak period.

1.

To determine your total consumption for 24 hours:

The meters should be read at the same time each day.
i.e. start read at 0600 hours and end read at 0600 hours.
For a consumer with 3 meters:

Meter 1
Meter 2
Meter 3
  Start at 0600
6218
7286
7651
  Finish at 0600
6369
7457
7811
  Total consumption
151
171
160
  Total of the 3 meters = 482

2.

Determine the consumption for the Off Peak period:

  e.g. Off-peak time: 1800 ON
    0600 OFF

Meter 1
Meter 2
Meter 3
  Start at 1800
6218
7286
7651
  Finish at 0600
6319
7400
7759
  Total consumption
101
114
108
Total Off Peak Consumption = 323

3.

Determine the off-peak percentage of the total consumption:

  Off-peak Units used x 100 = % off-peak 323 x 100 = 67.0%
  Total Unit used = 482
It would be to the consumer’s advantage to be using the Time of Use Tariff.

4.

Calculating the savings using the TOU Tariff.

Cost (TOU Tariff)
= (Unit used during peak period) x 0.2311
+ (Units used during the off-peak period) x 0.1301+ 0.4778
= (482 - 323) x 0.2311 + 323 x 0.1301+ 0.4778
= $79.24

Cost (Standard Commercial Tariff)
= (Unit used during total period) x 0.1805 + 0.4778
= 482 x 0.1805 + 0.4778
= $87.48

The example is provided as an approximate guide only. To obtain a more accurate
indication, this process should be repeated over a week, including the weekend, so that the average can be obtained.
