An attractive metering alternative available to our domestic customers is the pre-payment electricity meter.
Power is credited to the meter by means of a use-only-once token. The token is a magnetic strip card that comes in denominations of $5, $10, $20, and $50. The card is fed into a slot on the front of the meter and the value of the card is credited to the meter. The meter can hold credits of up to $999.
The current tariff for a pre-payment meter is 17.14 cents per kWh (GST Inc) compared to the current domestic credit meter of 15.01 cents per kWh. However, with the pre-payment meter there is no daily fixed charge of 29.59 cents per day. There are no initial connection or reconnection fees. However, if you decide to change back to a credit meter there will be an application fee of $56.00.
Meters are currently available for people with a single phase electricity service. You must have access to the meter box to insert the token into the meter. Written permission is required from your landlord if you are renting.
This chart indicates that if your average quarterly electricity consumption is 1250 kWh or less, the prepayment system is cheaper than the normal credit system.
