If you are digging, for whatever reason, you want to be sure about what you are letting yourself in for. You could hit a cable or a water main – and that means risking your safety and the safety of others. Someone could even be electrocuted. On top of that, you could be financially liable for any damage caused.
You can avoid potential problems with a single phone call through the national Dial Before You Dig program. Just call 1100 any time during normal business hours to get information about what might be underground outside properties (or any easement that may be on property). Dial Before You Dig covers Power and Water's sewerage, water and power services. You can have the information within two working days.
Remember, digging without planning first can:
Builders, contractors, plumbers, cable and pipe companies and anyone else who does excavations has a duty of care to do it safely. That means you can be held financially responsible if underground electricity and water pipes or cables are damaged.
