The Undergrounding Power Project has now been completed in Nightcliff with around 700 properties now having underground power. Work to underground the power supply to around 675 properties in Rapid Creek commenced in October 2006 with the first 343 properties due to be completed by mid-2008. The remaining properties are due to be completed by late 2008. Design work has commenced on Millner, which is the next suburb programmed for undergrounding power.

Stage A Package Areas A2-A5, comprising 329 properties, are now being supplied with underground power. Work on the second half of Nightcliff (known as Package Areas A6-A10) is expected to be completed by end 2006. Each package area comprises between 50 and 100 homes.
Community consultation is crucial to the success of this project, as was experienced during the pilot project carried out in 1997/98. The project team has adopted a direct personal consultation approach with residents before, during, and on completion of the project. This is being done through personal letters, newspaper advertisements and a 1800 freecall number.
Step 1 of the works involves directional boring under road crossings and into properties to install conduits into which the new underground cables will be placed.
Step 2 of the works involves digging a shallow trench along the nature strip. Conduits are then laid and backfilled with cement-stabilised sand. A concrete cover is laid as protection for the cables and to serve as the footpath.
Step 3 involves installing cables into the new conduits from the pillar which are then terminated at the existing meter box/supply point at each property.
Step 4 involves changing the power supply from overhead to the new underground supply.
