The Darwin Sewerage Strategy improves opportunities for effluent reuse and treatment of effluent discharged to the harbour under licensed conditions.
The Strategy allows for growth in demand for sewerage services in the CBD, Larrakeyah, Myilly Point, Wharf Precinct and Tank Farm for the next 25 years at the present growth rates.
The Frances Bay trunk mains and associated Dinah Beach Pumping Station were completed by the end of June 2000. This now enables connection of properties along Frances Bay Drive and the development in the former railway yards into the sewerage system. The septic tanks in those properties close to the harbour have been removed, significantly reducing the risk of pollution by septic tank overflow.
Part of the Darwin Sewerage Strategy is the upgrading of the Ludmilla Waste Water Treatment Plant, which will be completed in two stages. The upgrade will provide increased capacity and improved quality effluent. It is proposed that flows will be diverted from the CBD and Larrakeyah to the Ludmilla Treatment Plant.
The construction of a sewer main down Mitchell Street and a rising main from Cullen Bay in Darwin has been completed. This will improve sewer capacity both in Cullen Bay and in Larrakeyah, allowing for future development in Larrakeyah, Cullen Bay and Myilly Point.
