2010 NT Young Achiever Awards Winner

Jana is an enthusiastic young scientist who recently completed a highly successful Honours project at Menzies School of Health, Charles Darwin University.

In her studies Jana developed two key bacteria pathogens in childhood pneumonia.

Jana recently joined a research team in China to assess a study site for a vaccine in an earthquake zone – the next step in her future career in child health research.

Jacinta Kelly of Tipperary Waters and Katherine Strobel of Palmerston were finalists in the category.

Jacinta gained her Bachelor of Science and Engineering with First Class Honours and encourages other young people to enter the field through Young Engineers Australia.

Katherine has been researching acid rock drainage microbiology associated with mine sites in the Northern Territory and is now studying the ageing of shark samples.

Power and Water General Manager Strategy and Corporate Affairs Mike Knowles congratulated the Young Achiever finalists and nominees on their work.

"It is exciting to see the number of young people who are making real progress in this field,” Mr Knowles said.

“It's a pleasure for Power and Water to be able to encourage you in your work.”
