Two recent storms resulted in loss of power in Alice Springs and Central Australia. Lightning strikes and trees on powerlines have been the main causes of interruption to the power supply. The latest downpour is a timely reminder for all Central Australians to be prepared for the storm season. To prepare for a storm or cyclone, tidy up unsecured objects in your home and yard and trim loose or dying branches from trees. Call Power and Water before trimming vegetation close to powerlines. Read the Required clearances for trees near powerlines for more information.
Power and Water provides customers with information to prepare for the storm and cyclone season online. Prolonged or significant outages are notified on Twitter (PowerWaterCorp) and updates provided on the Unplanned outages page.
Remember to always stay away from fallen powerlines. Assume they are 'live' and dangerous. Report them immediately to our emergency number 1800 245 090. Read the Safety around trees and powerlines fact sheet for more information.
If the situation is not life threatening call Power and Water’s general enquiries number 1800 245 092. That way you won’t be preventing crews from responding to a real emergency.
You can still call customer services on 1800 245 092 for all power outage information and during a severe storm local radio stations will also give regular updates.
Each year Power and Water Corporation undertakes extensive preparations for the storm and cyclone season including intensive tree trimming and routine maintenance and upgrades to protect the electricity network and minimise the number and duration of unplanned outages.
Over the past year Power and Water has made significant progress on major infrastructure projects and introduced more intensive testing and maintenance programs to improve supply security in Alice Springs. The commissioning of three 10.9 megawatt engines at Owen Springs Power Station is now underway. These high efficiency engines and network infrastructure are part of a $160 million project that will support new growth for the area. Once complete, later this year, the Owen Springs Power Station will be Australia’s most efficient open-cycle power supply of its size.
