Rolls Royce power for Channel Island

Two new Rolls Royce-built turbines will be installed at Channel Island Power Station this year to increase the capacity of the Darwin-Katherine power system by nearly 25 per cent.

Power and Water signed the contract to purchase the turbines yesterday. They will be delivered within three months and installed before the next Wet Season.

"Electricity demand peaks in the Build Up and Wet Season, with daily demand of up to 275MW," Managing Director Andrew Macrides said.

"We are seeing that figure increase by three to four per cent each year, so while we had planned to add one turbine this year it is sensible to bring the second one forward from our 2012/2013 program.

"This will also allow us to carry out maintenance that is becoming due for some of our older plant at Channel Island."

The new units are 45MW Rolls Royce-built Trent 60 aeroderivative turbines.

Channel Island is Power and Water's largest power station with seven turbines. Weddell Power Station was also brought onto the Darwin-Katherine grid in 2008.

"We are familiar with the aeroderivitive technology but these are the first Rolls Royce turbines in our fleet," Mr Macrides said.

"Given their long history and excellent performance in this field we are quite excited about that."
