Normal electricity supply will be restored to Mandorah/Cox Peninsula residents tomorrow after confirmation the under-sea high voltage cable has not been damaged. The 66,000 volt cable that supplies power from the Darwin grid was disconnected as a precautionary safety measure on Friday night after the anchor of a vessel in Darwin Harbour became snagged on a cable.
Mandorah/Cox Peninsula residents have been on a backup generator since midnight Friday.
Divers were able to access the cable this morning and confirmed there was no damage to Power and Water infrastructure in the vicinity.
“It has taken a number of days for the conditions to be right and visibility good enough for divers to make a proper assessment of the cable that was snagged,” General Manager Power Networks Bertram Birk said.
“We thank residents for their understanding this week and their cooperation to minimise electricity use while they were on the backup generator.
“Now that we are confident it is safe, we will reenergise the cable tomorrow.”
Residents will experience a short planned outage of about 10 minutes tomorrow while crews restore customers to the main supply.
